Cycle East Yorkshire

The great thing about this area for cycling is that its accessible to everyone.  There are plenty of flat routes with just a few hills to get you started and some great short and long routes depending on the challenge you are after.

The Granary at Rustic Riddle is well positioned to allow us to access the Wolds Way and other routes including the Trans Pennine Way Cycle Route

Our Personal Challenge

We took up the challenge ourselves in 2018 to do the Wolds Challenge 144 miles over 2 days, camping at Hutton Cranswick, we are so not the fittest people and I enlisted a great personal trainer Katherine Bray to get me ready, and I couldn’t have done it without her, I went from not having ridden a bike since a child in March 2018 to completing 144 miles in July 2018 (big thanks and hugs to Katherine).

During our practice miles we became quite familiar with the different routes around us and even though I say its quite flat, I know there are hills around every corner, not big hills and probably very easy for the regular cyclist but to me they were hard work, especially around Sledmere, I didn’t even get to enjoy the down hills as I knew around the next corner would be the one back up.

Not having done any cycling since then I admit I am really missing it, there was a freedom and pride in visiting people without the need for a car and quietly impressed with the both of us for the miles we were able to achieve.  If honest part of the pleasure was the knowledge I could treat myself and eat what I wanted without the guilt.

The Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route*

This route takes you along some beautiful rural roads and dramatic coast roads, with a mix of flat and hills, a landscape that inspired David Hockney’s Woldgate.

144 miles of grand country houses, nature reserves, historic priories, and some interesting landmarks.  This route can be broken down into smaller chunks or the full route.

14.2 mile route – Starting from Ulrome the circular route to Gembling is a lovely ride of just 14.2 miles taking about an hour using up just enough calories for coffee and cake on your return.

26.6 mile route – For a slightly longer route head for Driffield  and you should be back in about 2 hours.

40 mile route – Ulrome – Burton Agnes – Kilham – Cowlam – Sledmere (say hi to the Shire Horse Sanctuary) – Driffield – North Frodingham and back. about a 4 hour ride.

58.7 mile route – The Granary – Burton Agnes – Kilham – Thwing – Foxholes – Kirby Grindalythe – Sledmere – Driffield – North Frodingham – Beeford and Ulrome – about a 5 hour ride.

Or how about a ride to Beverley, mostly cycle paths on the way there and come back via Leconfield – Hutton Cranswick – Driffield – Nafferton – Lowthorpe – Gransmore – Lissett and back in Ulrome  44.8 miles taking about 3.5 hours.

Other Cycle Route’s

This is part of the National Cycle Network.  This route follows the old railway from Hull to Hornsea

Starting at The Granary in Ulrome  you can access this cycle route with again many smaller circular routes.

19.6 miles to Hull – Ulrome – Skipsea – Atwick – Hornsea – follow the Trans Pennine Trail to Hull  taking about 1.40 hours
